Top SS16 Menswear Trends

Introduction

As we finally move into the final months of winter, our minds eagerly turn to the thought of warmer days ahead. Not only for long sunny afternoons spent at the park or beach, but for the lighter and brighter sartorial options that open up for us.

And, this spring/summer looks set to be as exciting as ever when it comes to menswear trends. From Cuban collared-shirting to wider-legged trousers, we round up the hottest trends to covet for the season ahead.

Lightweight Layering

Layering - Lou Dalton AW16 (Sam Wilson, British Fashion Council)

Practicality meets panache this spring, with London’s top menswear fashion week, London Collections: Men, showing designers send utility jackets worn over suits and top coats worn over blazers down the runway.

Lou Dalton took a refined approach to this look, layering Harringtons and windbreakers over a shirt on top of a T-shirt. Depending on the weather, you could add or remove pieces as needed with this stylish yet sensible trend.

The Cuban Collar

Cuban Collar - LCM (British Fashion Council)

The idea of short-sleeved shirts still fill many men with dread, but those of you will have to get over this fear fast as designers are now setting us brand new challenges. Say hello to the Cuban collar shirt for SS16, the open, notch lapel-esque style that would have been highly sought after in the 1950s.

Patrick Grant’s take on the style at E. Tautz mixed geometric prints with plain indigo, all with boxy cuts. The Cuban collar short-sleeved shirt is perfect for those of us who’ve worn our Oxford and gingham shirts to death. Test the waters by opting for a fitted, plain style tucked into a tailored pair of trousers and teamed with vintage brogues.

Wide-Leg Trousers

Wide-Leg Trousers - Craig Green AW16, FOH (Dan Sims, British Fashion Council)

Those who keep up with trends will have noticed menswear loosening up a bit in the past few seasons. Well, it appears this trend is here to stay with wider-legged trousers really coming into their own on the runways.

Dolce & Gabbana’s floral styles might be a bit much for the majority of us, but don’t be too quick to dismiss wider-legged trousers. The style can be an ideal way to keeping your legs cool during summer’s hotter days, and surely you’re tired of squeezing into slim and skinny fits by now?

Fade to Grey

Mr Porter Beams LCM AW16

Summer might usually bring to mind images of bright colours and vibrant prints, but turns out SS16 is all about a more subdued palette. From Missoni to Paul Smith, grey was the shade many top designers opted for in their spring/summer collections, in varying shades and patterns.

Most men own at least a bit of grey in their wardrobes already, but this season is about wearing the hue in different shades to create a tonal look with contrasting textures. So, what are you waiting for? Go grey…

Final Word

So there you have it. Whether you’re keeping cool with lightweight layering or wide-legged trousers, our round up of this summer’s hottest menswear trends will keep you on-point for the warmer months ahead.

And, if all else fails, skip the trends entirely and invest in a quality suit from UKYS. After all, trends come and go, but sartorial style is timeless.
